Small Swaps for a Healthier, Longer Life

We live in a world full of stressors and toxins, many of which are unavoidable. Growing up, I was always aware of this, but no one ever explained the true impact they could have on my health. It wasn’t until my early twenties, when I started struggling with my well-being, that I had a series of lightbulb moments. I began to understand that some everyday habits might have been hindering me without my realising it.

Today, I’m condensing my own lightbulb moments to share with you, along with some simple swaps that could contribute to better health and longevity.

I’ve always loved burning strong-scented candles around the house, whether during a relaxing bath or as part of my wind-down routine in the evening. But after learning that many conventional candles are made from paraffin wax, loaded with synthetic fragrances and dyes it made sense to me that breathing that in isn’t ideal. Switching to natural candles made from beeswax or soy wax, scented with essential oils was such a simple swap for me. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I’m not filling my home with unnecessary chemicals. Plus, I love the more subtle, earthy fragrances that come with these natural alternatives.

Perfume is a touchy subject for me because I love to smell nice. Growing up, I lathered Chanel No. 5 on every day and was constantly complimented. While I haven’t fully given up on my favourite scents, I’ve found a balance.

I discovered a beautiful natural perfume oil by AYU, made from plants and flowers. It’s become my go-to for daily wear. I save my beloved conventional perfumes for special occasions, like big events or celebrations (I also now spray it on my clothes not my skin). This approach lets me enjoy the best of both worlds without feeling like I’m compromising too much.

Reducing my exposure to pesticides and herbicides became a key focus for me. I’ve made a conscious effort to choose organic food whenever possible. Knowing that I’m minimising chemicals and added hormones in my meals—and getting food with higher antioxidant levels—makes a real difference to how I feel about what I’m putting in my body.

In my opinion, many organic foods taste better than their non-organic counterparts. Eggs, in particular, are a game-changer for me! While I know I won’t always be perfect in this goal, I try to choose organic whenever it’s an option.

Switching to plant-based or more natural cleaning products has been one of the easiest swaps I’ve made. The only challenge was getting others I’ve lived with on board! The bonus? It can be cost-effective, too. For instance, I clean the shower and bathroom with a mix of vinegar, baking soda, and water—simple, affordable, and effective.

Making conscious swaps to live a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to happen overnight. In fact, there were times when just making one change at a time was all I could handle. But even small steps were progress, and over time, they’ve become second nature to me.
